THE JOY OF A YELLOW ROSE

Our eldest daughter has Asperger syndrome, also known as Asperger disorder (AD). It is an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). It is mostly a hidden disability & you can't tell someone has it by their appearence. Just three of the many things she has constant difficulty with are the things listed below.

social communcation
 social interaction
 social imagination

She has been really struggling with her mood this morning. It has been a gradual slip over the last couple of days. She felt very low, hugely frustrated & lost. This can happen between laspes of intense focus for her on one of her on-going obessions. She can spend many hours on anything relating to Disney or Sims, blogging or creating journals of her memories & interests. But today even her obsessions were not helping to comfort or distract her. This is a very upsetting & difficult place for all four of us, when she is so depressed. As parents or a younger sister it is very hard to watch this degree of distress & not beable to find a way to help make her feel brighter. Then thankfully my husband helped to make something beautiful happen.

He adores gardening & the peace he gets from being outside for short periods of time. Today for the first time he came in with two of his roses, from the back of our garden. One of them was a huge, soft & femine yellow rose.  He gave it to our daughter to hold, as she stood in our kitchen. She smiled & her eyes lit up with wonder & joy. I felt an immediate desire to grab my camera to take some photographs of her. It was just a magic moment. The yellow rose had brought the most beautiful smile to her face & a moment of respite from her heavy mood & inner distress.

A simple flower had helped to shift her mood into a lighter place. Feeling much gratitude & thanks for that special moment for us all.
